Raymond G. Slaidins: Artist, Designer and Architect
As I See it:

My main inspiration today is the landscape outside my studio window and the nature that surounds me - about the place where I live, creating emotions mixed with reflections of places past.  Having grown up with the fields and forests of Northern Europe, having experienced the summer heat and winter blizzards of US prairie-land, having even walked through the sand dunes of Arabia, and steaming jungles in South America, I have finally found the best place for my liking. It is here in Northern California, where I am surrounded by water and hills, between the cosmopolitan city of San Francisco and the rustic vineyards of Sonoma, a place where palm trees grow side-by-side with redwood trees. This is the historical Spanish mission town of San Rafael with my house on the hillside and my studio overlooking the Bay waters, with a distant white city. Here I  can watch the gray morning fog, the midday blue sky and waters, and the scarlet sunsets. Camellias and bougainvillea's framing my window, with hummingbirds and seagulls flying around. I love the colors and forms around me. After my turbulent war-time youth I have found peace and tranquility here and I intend to dedicate my late years to capturing it in art. Having led a hectic professional life of designing large and small scale architectural forms throughout the world, but always keeping art at my side – observing, studying and practicing it, I have realized that only in painting and drawing I have my own control over what I do. I do not intend to change the world with my art, therefore don’t look for any hidden meanings or symbols in my work. What you see is what you get. It is art for arts’ sake – therefore enjoy it as such!
